The third workshop on "Parameterization of Lakes in Numerical Weather
Prediction and Climate Modelling" was arranged in Helsinki on
September 18-20, 2012.
The aim of the workshop is to discuss and develop the methods of handling lakes in the numerical weather prediction (NWP) and climate models. Attention is paid to the prognostic parametrisations, assimilation of lake observations, description of lake physiographic properties in the models. The Helsinki workshop continues the work started in the previous workshops in Zelenogorsk, 2008, results published in a special issue (No 2, Vol. 15) of Boreal Environment Research and Norrköping, 2010, material to be published in special lake issue of Tellus A in 2012.
Sessions with the following topics are planned:
Lake-atmosphere coupling. Focuses on the impact of lakes on atmospheric processes as well as parameterisations in the atmospheric part of the modelling systems related to lakes.
External parameters. Focuses on parameters important for description of lake characteristics, e.g. lake depth and lake fraction.
Assimilation of observations on lake surface state. Focuses on usage of space-borne and in-situ observations and their assimilation with the prognostic lake variables.
Model validation and intercomparison. Focuses
on validation of NWP models that incorporate lake parameterization and
data assimilation, single-column studies, and intercomparison of lake
models (Lake Model Intercomparison Project, LakeMIP, started at the
first workshop).
Processes in fresh-water bodies beyond lake physics. Focuses on processes related to e.g. biochemistry and water quality issues.
Researchers and research students working with these topics are welcome to submit a short abstract for a presentation of 20-30 minutes. In addition to the participants' presentations keynote presentations will be given and room for discussions will be made.
The workshop will be arranged in the lecture hall of the Finnish Meteorological Institute. Part of the lectures will be made available via a video conference system.
